Goddess Baglamukhi, also known as Pitambara, is one of the ten Mahavidyas or great goddesses in Hinduism. She is believed to be the eighth avatar of Goddess Durga and is worshipped for her ability to provide protection and liberation from negativity and obstacles. Baglamukhi is often depicted as a fierce goddess with golden complexion, wearing yellow clothes and adorned with a crown made of snakes. She holds a club in her right hand and pulls the tongue of a demon with her left hand. This represents her power to silence and control negative forces.
The name Baglamukhi is derived from the Sanskrit words “bagla” and “mukha”, which mean “bridle” and “face” respectively. This refers to her ability to “bridle” or control one’s speech and actions, as well as the power to “face” or confront one’s fears and challenges.

The Power of Silence and Transformation
Baglamukhi is known for her power of silence, which is considered a crucial aspect of spiritual transformation. Baglamukhi is also known for her ability to transform negative energy into positive energy. This is why she is worshipped by those seeking to overcome negative influences and attain spiritual progress.
The symbolism of Baglamukhi’s tongue pulling the demon represents the ability to control the mind and the senses. It is believed that the mind is like a demon, always wandering and causing distraction. By silencing the mind and controlling the senses, one can achieve spiritual progress and connect with the divine.
Origin and Mythology of Maa Baglamukhi
The origin of Baglamukhi is mentioned in various Hindu texts, including the Markandeya Purana and the Devi Mahatmya. According to mythology, once there was a demon named Madan who was causing havoc on Earth. All the gods and goddesses tried to stop him, but he was too powerful for them. Then, Baglamukhi appeared and stopped him by pulling out his tongue. This act is believed to symbolize the power of Baglamukhi to restrain and control negative forces.
Ancient Tantric scriptures mention the “Dashamahavidyas” or ten great wisdom goddesses. These are: 1. Kali, 2. Tara, 3. Shodashi, 4. Bhuvaneshwari, 5. Chhinnamasta, 6. Tripur Bhairavi, 7. Dhumavati, 8. Baglamukhi, 9. Matangi, and 10. Kamala. Each of these goddesses holds unique significance in spiritual practice. However, among all, Maa Bhagwati Shri Baglamukhi is considered particularly special.
Maa Baglamukhi is the eighth of the ten Mahavidyas. She is also known as Maa Pitambara. She is the force behind all vibrations and energies in the universe. This form of the goddess represents the fierce and intense aspect of Goddess Parvati. Maa Baglamukhi is associated with the color yellow, radiating a yellow aura, and thus, the color yellow plays a significant role in her worship. She is revered as the goddess of “stambhana shakti,” which is the power to immobilize or paralyze.
The name “Baglamukhi” derives from the Sanskrit word “Valga,” which means “bridle” or “rein,” symbolizing control. According to the Kubjika Tantra, the name “Bagla” is composed of three letters: ‘Va,’ ‘Ga,’ and ‘La.’ The letter ‘Va’ represents Varuni (divine power), ‘Ga’ signifies Siddhida (bestower of success), and ‘La’ refers to Earth. Therefore, due to her divine beauty and power to control, Maa Baglamukhi is named so.
It is said that those who worship Maa Baglamukhi with full faith and devotion are blessed by her, fulfilling their desires and protecting them from enemies by destroying their adversaries.
